MouthEze is an innovative new solution to delivering safe patient oral hygiene.
A class 1 Medical Device for use in delivering safe mouthcare, it is suitable for use anywhere delivering personal care, including hospitals, nursing and residential homes, hospices and dental practices.
Each MoutEze stick features a cone shaped head with smooth rounded filaments, which gently sooth the soft tissues when cleaning the oral mucosa. By applying a rotating action, MouthEze can collect debris as it cleans.
A breakthrough in specialist mouthcare
MouthEze is ergonomically designed to cleanse and clean the mouth. It has been assessed and tested with a wide range of patient groups:
Older people, people living with dementia, patients with neurological conditions such as Stroke, cancer therapy patients, people with learning disability and patients in specialised intensive care units.
What can MouthEze be used for?
MouthEze can be used safely with ventilated patients at risk of contracting ventilated associated pneumonia (VAP).
MouthEze is for those people who are dependent or require assistance for mouth care and for people where conventional methods i.e. toothbrushes and sponge swabs are not suitable.
Why shouldn't I carry on using traditional foam tipped mouth swabs?
MouthEze was developed following a medical safety alert from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency which involved the use of potentially dangerous foam mouth swabs.
“…the foam head detached from the stick of an oral swab while a carer was providing mouth care to an elderly patient. The head could not be retrieved. The patient subsequently died.”
Over 800 patient safety incidents have been reported by The National Patient Safety Agency, where the foam head had either become detached or pieces of the foam head were torn off and retained or lodged in the mouth.
Foam mouth swabs have since been banned across Wales and many Healthcare Trusts across England.
